Focus on Processing Challenges of Specialty Plastics: Poor Flow, High Molding Temperatures, and Mold Wear – Parameter Recommendations from JRS

As specialty engineering plastics (PPS, PEEK, PPSU, PEI, LCP) increasingly replace metals in home appliances—dishwashers, coffee makers, air fryers, gas cooktops—processors face three persistent headaches: poor melt flow, extremely high molding temperatures, and severe mold wear. At JRS, a Shenzhen-based manufacturer and sourcing supplier specializing in home appliance parts and custom manufacturing solutions, we tackle these issues daily on our own injection molding machines, supported by our in house tooling engineers and production lines. Drawing from real shop data, here are our systematic parameter recommendations.

1. Poor Flowability – From Short Shots to Complete Fill

High viscosity melts (especially glass filled grades) often cause short shots, weak weld lines, and incomplete filling.

Key parameter adjustments:

Barrel temperature (segmented heating): Raise temperatures stepwise—lower at the rear to prevent bridging, higher at the front to ensure full plasticization.

Material Rear → Middle → Front (°C) Nozzle (°C)
PPS+GF 260–280 → 290–310 → 300–320 300–310
PEEK 340–360 → 360–380 → 370–390 350–400
PPSU 340–360 → 360–370 → 370–380 370–380
PEI 340–360 → 360–370 → 370–380 match front
PPA 280–300 → 300–320 → 320–340 300–330

Mold temperature: Critical for delaying freeze off. Increase to:

  • PPS: 120–180°C (higher for thin walls)
  • PEEK: 160–200°C (oil/water temperature controller required)
  • PPSU: 140–165°C
  • PEI: 130–160°C

We’ve seen short shot rates drop from 15% to <0.3% by raising mold temperature from 130°C to 165°C on a PPS+40%GF dishwasher nozzle.

Injection speed & pressure: Use multi stage profiling—slow for runner, medium for cavity, fast for final filling. For PEEK, use 80–120 mm/s and 120–180 MPa; for PPS, 80–150 MPa.

2. High Molding Temperatures – Walking the Thermal Tightrope

Processing above 300°C (up to 400°C for PEEK) invites thermal degradation, yellowing, and corrosive gas release (e.g., H₂S from PPS).

Essential controls:

  • Strict drying: Moisture triggers hydrolysis at high heat.
Material Drying Temp (°C) Time (h) Target Moisture
PEEK 120–150 (vacuum) 4–6 <0.02%
PPS 120–140 3–4 <0.05%
PPSU 140–150 (dehumidifying) ≥4 <0.02%
PEI 150 4 <0.02%

Dried material must be used within 2 hours; otherwise, re dry.

  • Precise temperature control: Never exceed the recommended melt window. Monitor residence time—PPSU should not stay in the barrel longer than 10–15 minutes.
  • Purge before shutdown: Always clean the barrel with PP or PE to prevent carbonization.
  • Mold cooling design: Use conformal cooling or densely placed circuits to keep the mold surface temperature difference ≤5°C.

3. Mold Wear – The Abrasive Battle with Glass Fibers

Most specialty plastics contain 30–50% glass or carbon fibers. These abrasive fillers erode cavities, gates, slides, and ejector pins, drastically shortening mold life.

Plastic Recommended Steel Hardness Coating/Treatment
PPS+GF SKD61, SKD11, H13 HRC 55–62 Nitriding / PVD
PEEK+GF H13, H11 HRC 52–56 Vacuum quenching
LCP+GF SKD11 grade HRC 55–62 Mirror polish
PPSU S136 hardened HRC 50–55 Corrosion resistant

Process optimization to reduce erosion:

  • Reduce injection speed at the end of fill to lessen high velocity impact on gates.
  • Optimize gate location and shape—use fan or tab gates to disperse abrasive flow.
  • Schedule regular maintenance: inspect gates, parting lines, and slides every 50,000 cycles.
